Chapter Eight

Kitty followed Dylan inside with Liam right behind her. The back hallway was similar to most delivery areas she’d seen. Wide concrete walls stretched in both directions with nothing adorning them. Her nose told her food was being prepared down to the left, while the smell of laundry detergent wafted from the right. They were in the bowels of the resort where all the nitty-gritty, day-to-day tasks were performed behind the scenes by what would surely be very large staff.

Turning left, they made their way past the kitchens. All manner of scents spilled from behind the swinging door, and saliva pooled in Kitty’s mouth. She craned her neck to peek through the tiny round window but couldn’t see much of anything other than several shifters running around as they prepared their dishes.

“We’ll order once you’re settled,” Liam whispered near her ear, sending a shiver down her spine. “I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for a hearty meal.”

Not wanting to embarrass herself by possibly drooling down her chin, Kitty kept her lips sealed and merely replied with a nod.

Near the end of the hall, they came to another door, this one leading toward the lobby, and Dylan stopped. “I’ll step out and push the button for the elevator. You guys wait here, and once the doors are open, I want you to get in quickly. We’re still trying to keep your presence as secretive as possible, as you requested, but getting in and out of the building will always pose the risk of being seen.”

Kitty offered him a warm smile. “I appreciate everything you’re doing, Dylan.”

“Hey, what about me?”

She turned to see Liam with an exaggerated pout pulling at his full lips. “Oh, I believe I’ve already demonstrated my gratitude for what you’ve done,” Kitty sassed with a wink.

“I’ll just go call for the elevator now,” Dylan said, practically diving through the door.

Kitty giggled. “I think we’re making your brother uncomfortable.”

“Probably, but I’ve had to deal with him and Samantha hanging all over each other and making goo-goo eyes, so it’s only fair.”

Once signaled, they dashed out, and Kitty sighed when the doors slid closed without anyone noticing them. She watched as Dylan slid a keycard into a slot next to the elevator’s control panel then pressed the “P” button.

“This floor is private access only. Without a specially coded keycard, nobody can get up here. Liam, me, Samantha, Lynn, and the two enforcers you’ve already met are the only ones capable of coming up here,” Dylan explained. “We’ll have a card programmed for you, as well, but for the time being, you’ll be with Liam or the enforcers, so you can get back up here whenever you like.”

“Not that I want you going anywhere without me,” Liam put in.

“Easy there,” she replied, patting Liam’s chest as a little ding sounded, announcing the arrival to their floor. “I was perfectly content to live in a cave, so I think I can handle roughing it in a hotel for a few weeks.
